Learn Beyond AI — what AI does well, where it fails, and what to build alongside it
Free — no account needed to read
What modern AI actually is, where it is strong and where it is unreliable — and the human capabilities worth building alongside it: judgement, creativity, connection, learning and purpose. 19 lessons across 9 areas, each with a worked example.
The big idea
AI is very good at producing things. People remain responsible for deciding what is worth producing, and for what happens next.
- AI can generate answers
- You decide which questions matter.
- AI can analyse information
- You interpret significance and context.
- AI can generate ideas
- You develop taste and choose worthwhile ideas.
- AI can write drafts
- You communicate with purpose.
- AI can generate plans
- You set priorities and take responsibility.
- AI can automate tasks
- You design meaningful systems.
- AI can provide recommendations
- You make informed decisions.
- AI can teach information
- You build understanding and judgement.
- AI can simulate possibilities
- You experience reality and act.
The areas
- Understand the Machine — You can only direct what you understand. (3 lessons)
- Think — Develop your own mind. (2 lessons)
- Judge — AI can generate possibilities. You still need judgement. (2 lessons)
- Create — When creation becomes cheap, taste becomes more important. (2 lessons)
- Understand People — Technology can simulate communication. Relationships still need people. (2 lessons)
- Build — Ideas are cheap. Execution is not. (2 lessons)
- Learn How to Learn — Don't memorise the world. Learn how to keep learning it. (2 lessons)
- Experience Reality — Not everything important can be learned from a model. (2 lessons)
- Purpose & Agency — If AI can help you do almost anything, you need to know what you want to do. (2 lessons)
What not to hand over
- Thinking
- Don't immediately ask AI for the answer. Try first.
- Writing
- Don't always ask AI to write your thoughts. Build your ability to express them.
- Decisions
- Don't ask "What should I do?" Ask: "Here is what I think. Help me examine it."
- Learning
- Don't turn every hard problem into an AI answer. Sometimes the struggle is the learning.
- Creativity
- Don't always start with AI generation. Create your own direction first.
- Relationships
- Don't outsource important human conversations.
- Values
- Don't ask AI what your values should be.
- Purpose
- Don't ask AI what your life should mean.
What AI is genuinely useful for
Summarising, Brainstorming, Tutoring, Translation, Repetitive tasks, Coding help, Research assistance, Data processing, Drafting, Organising, Automation, Feedback, Simulation.
The principle
- Understand the machine.
- Direct the machine.
- Question the machine.
- Work with the machine.
- Know when not to use the machine.
- Build the capabilities that let you make better use of the machine.
