Learn How to Learn

Don't memorise the world. Learn how to keep learning it. The most durable skill is getting good at new things.

Don't memorise the world. Learn how to keep learning it.

In one line: Stay good at getting good at new things — and know when to stop asking and struggle with it yourself.

When you need it

  • You followed the explanation perfectly and could not reproduce any of it the next day.
  • You are stuck, and the assistant is one keystroke away.
  • A skill you now need did not exist in its current form two years ago.

The common misreading

What people think
If it felt easy and clear, the learning worked.
What is true instead
Feeling fluent while reading is mostly familiarity. The effort of retrieving something without help is what makes it stay — which is why the version that works feels worse at the time.

After this area you can tell the difference between recognising an answer and being able to produce it.

The key idea

The most durable skill is getting good at new things. Use AI as a tutor — and know when to stop asking and struggle with the problem yourself.

What it teaches

  • Metacognition
  • Active learning
  • Deliberate practice
  • Retrieval practice
  • Deep reading
  • Research
  • Evaluating sources
  • Mental models
  • Transferring knowledge

Think first

A student uses AI to finish every maths assignment perfectly. Their exam results drop.

What happened? How could the same student use the same AI and learn more instead?

The lessons

  • Why struggle is part of learning — Struggle first, then ask for a hint, then — only if needed — the answer. (5 min)
  • Using AI as a tutor, not a shortcut — Ask AI to question you and give feedback — measure learning by what you can do on your own. (6 min)

Practise: Teach it back

Find out what you actually know.

  1. Choose a concept you are learning.
  2. Explain it in writing without looking anything up.
  3. Ask an AI to point out gaps or errors in your explanation — not to rewrite it.
  4. Fix the gaps yourself, then note what you had misunderstood.

Reflect

What did you discover about how you learn best — and when AI helped or got in the way?
