Think

Develop your own mind. Don't outsource your thinking simply because AI can think with you.

Develop your own mind.

In one line: Do the first pass of thinking yourself, so that whatever AI adds lands on a mind that already has a position.

When you need it

  • You are reaching for an assistant before you have formed any view of your own.
  • A conclusion feels obviously right and you cannot say what it rests on.
  • The same problem keeps being solved and keeps coming back.

The common misreading

What people think
Thinking for yourself means not using AI.
What is true instead
It means going first. Your own attempt is what gives you something to compare against — and an assistant is far more useful to someone who already holds a draft of a view than to someone waiting to be handed one.

After this area you can name the assumptions underneath a conclusion before you accept it.

The key idea

Don't outsource your thinking simply because AI can think with you.

What it teaches

  • Critical thinking
  • Reasoning
  • Questioning assumptions
  • First-principles thinking
  • Systems thinking
  • Probabilistic thinking
  • Logical fallacies
  • Facts vs assumptions
  • Recognising uncertainty
  • Asking better questions

Think first

You ask an AI why sales at a small café dropped this month. It answers: "Customer preferences have shifted toward healthier options, so you should add salads."

What would you question? What other explanations are possible, and what would you check first?

The lessons

  • Separate facts from assumptions — Before you accept a conclusion, name what it is assuming. (5 min)
  • First principles and systems — Break it down, see how the pieces connect, and be honest about how sure you are. (6 min)

Practise: Try first, then compare

Think it through before you ask.

A friend asks whether they should quit a stable job to freelance.

  1. Spend five minutes writing your own reasoning — the questions you would ask and what you would weigh.
  2. Now ask an AI the same question.
  3. Mark what it raised that you missed, and what you raised that it missed.
  4. Write one sentence on what "trying first" changed.

Reflect

What did you discover about how you think when you tried first, before asking anyone?
