Understand People

Free — no account needed to read

Technology can simulate communication. Relationships still need people.

In one line: Build the trust that only forms between people, and get better at the conversations that actually decide things.

When you need it

  • A thread has gone round four times and nothing has been resolved.
  • Someone disagrees with you and you are preparing a rebuttal rather than a question.
  • You need someone to trust you with something that matters to them.

The common misreading

What people think
Good communication is saying your own point clearly.
What is true instead
Most of it is the other half — being able to state their position so accurately that they would sign your version of it. Almost nobody practises that half.

After this area you can summarise someone else’s position well enough that they would agree with your summary, before you answer it.

The key idea

Trust, empathy and leadership are built between people, in real conversations — and they grow more valuable as more communication becomes automated.

What it teaches

  • Listening
  • Empathy
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Negotiation
  • Leadership
  • Conflict resolution
  • Building trust
  • Mentoring
  • Different perspectives

Think first

A manager uses AI to write all feedback messages to their team. The messages are polite and well written. Team trust is slowly dropping.

Why might trust be dropping even though the messages are well written? What should the manager do differently?

The lessons

  • Listening to understand — Aim to explain their view so well that they agree with your summary. (5 min)
  • Working through disagreement — Agree on the shared goal first, then disagree about the path. (6 min)

Practise: Explain it to someone new

A real conversation, not a simulated one.

  1. Pick an idea from your work or study that you understand well.
  2. Explain it to someone with no background — a friend or family member — without notes or AI.
  3. Ask them to explain it back to you.
  4. Write down what they understood, what got lost, and how you would explain it next time.

Reflect

What did you discover about listening, trust or yourself in a real conversation?
