If AI can help you do almost anything, you need to know what you want to do.
In one line: When more things become possible, deciding what is worth doing becomes the real work.
When you need it
- Your week was full and you could not say what it was for.
- You are measuring yourself against a definition of success you never chose.
- Something just became cheap to do, and you are about to do more of it simply because you can.
The common misreading
- What people think
- Purpose is a single big answer you find once.
- What is true instead
- It behaves much more like a direction you keep correcting. The useful version is concrete enough to change what you do on a Tuesday.
After this area you can describe what a good ordinary day looks like for you, in your own terms rather than borrowed ones.
The key idea
If AI makes many things easier, what is worth doing?
What it teaches
- Personal values
- Goals
- Purpose
- Identity
- Responsibility
- Autonomy
- Meaningful work
- Long-term thinking
- Defining success for yourself
Think first
Someone asks an AI: "What should the meaning of my life be?" and receives a thoughtful answer.
What is valuable about the answer? What can only they decide?
The lessons
- What is worth doing? — Tools can expand what you can do. Only you can decide what is worth doing. (6 min)
- Define success for yourself — Describe success in your own concrete terms, and revisit it. (5 min)
Practise: Your own compass
Decide what is yours to decide.
- Write three values you would not trade for more money or convenience.
- Write one thing you want to be true about your life in five years.
- Write one small action this week that moves toward it.
- Optionally, save these in Compass so your companion knows them too.
