Not everything important can be learned from a model.
In one line: Go and do the real thing, because some feedback only exists on the far side of doing it.
When you need it
- You have researched something thoroughly and never once tried it.
- A plan depends on how people will behave and nobody has watched them.
- You keep learning about a field you have never actually stood in.
The common misreading
- What people think
- Reading enough about something is a slower version of experiencing it.
- What is true instead
- They give different things. A description tells you what is generally true; doing it tells you what is true here, with these people, in this room — including the parts nobody thought to write down.
After this area you can close a real experience with the three lines that turn it into judgement: expected, happened, next time.
The key idea
Experience > Simulation. Experience → feedback → reflection → better judgement.
What it teaches
- Real-world projects
- Internships and volunteering
- Real conversations
- Experiments
- Making physical things
- Teaching others
- Observing people
- Living with consequences
- Reflection
Think first
Two people learn to manage a team. One reads and simulates every scenario with AI. The other leads a small volunteer group for three months.
What does each one learn that the other doesn't? Which combination would be strongest?
The lessons
- Experience → feedback → reflection — Do real things, and always close the loop with reflection. (5 min)
- Seek experiences on purpose — Deliberately put yourself where real feedback can reach you. (5 min)
Practise: Close the loop
Turn one real event into judgement.
- Choose something real you did recently that had an outcome.
- Write what you expected to happen.
- Write what actually happened and what surprised you.
- Write one thing you will do differently next time.
Reflect
What did you discover that no simulation or model could have shown you?
