Practise saying no — or not yet — clearly, kindly and in your own words.
Situations to practise on
- Another project when you are already full
- Your manager asks you to take on another project. You are already working late most days.
- A friend asks to borrow money again
- A friend asks to borrow money. They have not paid back the last loan, and you are not comfortable lending more.
- A relative wants to stay for a week
- A relative asks to stay with you for a week during a busy stretch. You love them, and it would be too much right now.
- Work messages late at night
- A colleague often messages you about work after 10pm and seems to expect a quick answer.
- Someone pressures you to decide now
- A salesperson — or a friend — says you need to decide today or you will miss out.
The steps
- What do you feel when you imagine saying yes?
- What do you need here? Time, rest, fairness, money, space — say it plainly to yourself first.
- Wordings other people find useful Examples to adapt, not scripts to recite.
- Write your version, in your own words
- If they push back, what will you say the second time — calmly? Repeating yourself kindly is allowed. You don’t owe a longer explanation.
Wordings to adapt
Examples to make your own — never scripts to recite.
- I can’t do that.
- I need some time to think.
- I disagree, but I understand your point.
- I can do this part, but not that part.
- That doesn’t work for me — here’s what could.
Afterwards, ask yourself
Where in your life is a boundary like this one most needed right now?
