Situations to practise on
- A friend who didn’t get the job
- “I didn’t get it. Honestly I’m fine, it’s whatever. I just really thought the interview went well. And my parents already told half the family I was getting it, so now I have to explain that too.”
- A colleague who is overloaded
- “It’s fine, I’ll finish it tonight. I always do. It’s just that every time someone leaves early, it lands on my desk, and nobody seems to notice.”
- A sibling who is moving away
- “The new job is great, it really is. It’s a big step. I don’t know, the flat is small and I don’t know anyone there, but that’s normal, right? Everyone says it’s exciting.”
- A classmate with a bad mark
- “I studied for weeks and still got a worse mark than people who barely tried. Maybe I’m just not cut out for this subject. I don’t even know why I picked it.”
The steps
- Summarise what they said in one or two sentences — no advice If they read your summary, would they say “yes, that’s it”?
- What might they be feeling? Name it — and remember it is a guess Often there is more than one feeling at once.
- What might matter to them that they didn’t say directly?
- One open question that would help them say more
- While reading, what did you most want to do? Every one of these is a normal urge. Noticing it is the skill.
Afterwards, ask yourself
What would change if you listened this way in your next real conversation?
