From small talk to meaningful conversation

The small step from facts to feelings, reasons and stories.

The idea

Moving from small talk to meaningful conversation usually takes one small step: from facts to reasons, feelings or stories. “What do you do?” is a fact. “What do you enjoy most about it?” invites something real.

Share a little of your own real answer too — openness invites openness. Go gradually, notice whether the other person wants to go further, and respect it if they don’t.

Why it matters

Relationships grow in meaningful conversations. Research on everyday talk suggests people enjoy deeper conversations with strangers more than they expect to.

See it happen

Waiting for a meeting, Nasir chats with a colleague about the traffic, as always.

The first reaction
He keeps to the usual topics; it feels safe and pleasant enough.
With the idea
He asks, “What’s been the best part of your month?” His colleague talks about her daughter’s first steps. They have a warmer relationship after that.
What changed
One question about feelings rather than facts opened a door both of them were happy to walk through.

Easy to get wrong

  • Jumping to very personal questions too fast.
  • Going deeper yourself without noticing whether the other person wants to.

Try it now: Facts to reasons

  1. Write three fact questions you often ask (“Where do you work?”).
  2. Rewrite each to ask about reasons, feelings or stories.
  3. Circle the one you would feel comfortable trying.

Questions to think about

  • What conversation in the past year felt most meaningful to you, and how did it start?
  • What makes you comfortable going deeper with someone?

Your challenge this week

Start one meaningful conversation this week with a single “why” or “what’s that like” question.
