What networking actually means

Not collecting contacts — building relationships that create value both ways.

The idea

Networking is often imagined as collecting contacts and handing out cards. What actually works is building relationships where value flows both ways: information, introductions, help, advice, encouragement.

Creating mutual value means asking “how could I be useful to this person?” as often as “how could they help me?” People remember who helped them, and a network built on usefulness and trust outlasts one built on transactions.

Why it matters

Opportunities, jobs, collaborators and advice travel through relationships. A mutual network makes those relationships real.

See it happen

Tanvir attends events and connects with dozens of people online, but nobody ever replies when he asks for help.

The first reaction
He decides networking doesn’t work for people like him.
With the idea
He starts sharing useful articles with contacts, introducing people to each other, and congratulating them on news. Months later, when he asks for advice, several reply warmly.
What changed
He shifted from collecting contacts to creating value, and the relationships became real.

Easy to get wrong

  • Only contacting people when you need something.
  • Measuring your network by numbers instead of relationships.

Try it now: Your mutual map

  1. List five people in your professional or learning world.
  2. For each, write one way you could be useful to them.
  3. Pick one and act on it this week.

Questions to think about

  • What does “networking” feel like to you — useful, awkward, fake?
  • What value could you offer people that you underestimate?

Your challenge this week

Help someone in your network this week with no request attached.

  • Giving before asking — Help, introductions and useful things first; requests come later and land better. (6 min · Beginner)
  • Building professional relationships — Work relationships that are useful and human at the same time. (7 min · Practising)
