Knowing yourself · Lesson 4 of 5

Where you thrive

Everyone does their best in certain conditions. Knowing yours helps you choose work, study and relationships that bring out your best.

Some people come alive in busy, social places; others do their best thinking alone and in quiet. Some love variety and new problems every day; others prefer depth and steady routine. Some need clear structure; others need freedom. None of these is better. They are simply different.

You can learn your conditions by paying attention to moments when you felt most engaged, energised or proud of your work. What was around you? How many people were there? How much structure, pressure, freedom or support? The same conditions often repeat.

Once you see your conditions, you can shape your life toward them where possible: the kind of job to look for, how to set up your study time, what kind of friendships feed you. Where you cannot change the setting, you can often add one small piece of what you need.

See it happen

Aiko, a nurse, feels drained on some shifts and energised on others, and assumes it depends only on how busy the ward is.

The first reaction
Busy shifts are tiring and quiet shifts are easier, so the energy she feels must simply follow the workload each day.
With the idea
She notes her best shifts over a month and sees they were the ones where she taught a new colleague something. She asks to be involved in training new staff, and her energy at work lifts noticeably.
What changed
She tracked her best moments and found the condition that brings out her best.

Easy to take the wrong way

Knowing where you thrive does not mean you should only ever be comfortable. Growth often happens outside your ideal conditions. The aim is to know yourself well enough to choose when to stretch.
