Habit troubleshooter · Context dependence + portable versions

“The habit works at home but not elsewhere.”

The habit works at home but not elsewhere? On ordinary days it runs well; on trips, weekends or unusual days it vanishes.

On ordinary days it runs well; on trips, weekends or unusual days it vanishes.

What is usually going on

Context dependence
The habit is tied to cues that only exist in one place.
Cue variation
When the cue changes — a different wake-up time, a different room — the habit has nothing to start it.
Travel planning
Trips and unusual weeks arrive without a plan for the habit.
Environment changes
Your usual setup — equipment, space, time — isn’t available.
Portable versions of behaviors
There’s only one version of the habit, and it needs the full setup.

Questions to ask yourself

Where does it fall apart?

  • When I travel
  • On weekends or days off
  • On unusual or busy days

What does the habit need?

  • Special equipment or a particular place
  • A particular time slot
  • Nothing special

Recommended area: Context dependence + portable versions.

Techniques worth testing

  • A portable version — a version that needs no special place or kit can travel with you. (MFJ synthesis)
  • Anchor it to a routine — anchoring to something that happens everywhere — waking up, brushing your teeth — gives a cue that travels. (Research-supported)
  • If–then plan — an if–then plan made before the trip decides when and where the habit happens there. (Supported by multiple studies)
  • Same place, same time — knowing which cues start the habit at home tells you which to recreate elsewhere. (Supported by multiple studies)
  • The minimum viable version — a small version keeps the habit alive until your usual setup is back. (Practitioner framework)

Test one technique on your own habit for a week or two and keep it only if it helps. What works differs from person to person.
