Most habits that fail do not fail from a lack of willpower. They fail for a specific reason — a missing cue, too big a first step, a routine that clashes with the day. Pick the problem that sounds like yours.

  • “I keep forgetting.” — You mean to do it, and then the moment slips past — you remember at night, or not at all. (Prompts + contextual cues)
  • “I start strongly and then stop.” — The first week or two go well, then it thins out and quietly disappears. (Behaviour size + reward + review + environmental support)
  • “I don’t feel motivated.” — You know it matters, but when the moment comes you just don’t feel like it. (Motivation vs action — friction, meaning, reward and autonomy)
  • “I miss one day and give up.” — Once the run is broken, the whole habit feels ruined, and it’s easier to stop than to start again. (Lapse vs abandonment + recovery planning)
  • “I have too many habits.” — You’re tracking a lot, and most days feel like a list you can’t finish. (Prioritisation + habit load)
  • “The habit works at home but not elsewhere.” — On ordinary days it runs well; on trips, weekends or unusual days it vanishes. (Context dependence + portable versions)
  • “My habit became boring.” — It still happens, but it feels flat, and you’ve started skipping it. (Reward + novelty + progression)
  • “I remember, but I don’t start.” — You know it’s time. You even think about it. And then you do something else. (Reduce friction + make the starting action smaller)
  • “I never have time.” — The day fills up, and the habit is always the thing that gets pushed out. (Scheduling + a smaller version)
  • “I can’t stop an unwanted habit.” — You’ve decided to stop, and it still happens — often before you’ve even noticed. (Triggers + friction + substitution)
  • “I slip when I’m stressed or tired.” — On good days it’s fine. On hard days the good habit disappears or an old one comes back. (Coping plans + emotional triggers)
  • “I don’t see any progress.” — You’ve been at it for a while, and it doesn’t feel like anything is changing. (Monitoring + feedback + realistic expectations)
  • “Other people or my surroundings get in the way.” — The plan works until someone else’s needs, habits or space collide with it. (Environment + social support)
  • “If I can’t do it properly, I don’t do it at all.” — A day that can’t hold the full version becomes a day of nothing. (Minimum version + flexible standards)
