Running idea generation and evaluation as two activities, not one.

The steps

  1. Set a number before you start — twenty, not "a few".
  2. Generate with judgement explicitly suspended. Write the bad ones down too.
  3. Stop. Take a break, even a short one.
  4. Now evaluate against criteria you wrote before you saw the options.

When to use it

Any time you find yourself with exactly two options.

What it will not do

Quantity helps but does not guarantee quality. The break between the two modes is doing real work.

Where it comes from: Kelley & Kelley, Creative Confidence. Described in our own words.
