Silences, mistakes and misfires — recover, and move on.

The idea
Awkward moments happen to everyone: a long silence, a joke that falls flat, forgetting a name, saying the wrong thing. They feel huge from the inside and small from the outside.
Recovery is usually simple: acknowledge it lightly (“well, that joke didn’t land”), ask a question to restart, or just move on. Silence, in particular, is less awkward than it feels — a pause can be comfortable.
Why it matters
Handling awkwardness well is a big part of seeming at ease — and it frees you from fearing it.
See it happen
On a first coffee with a new colleague, the conversation stops dead after ten minutes.
- The first reaction
- Mahmud panics, talks about the weather at length, and leaves feeling it went badly.
- With the idea
- He smiles and asks, “So what made you choose this job?” The conversation restarts easily.
- What changed
- A calm question turned a pause into a new start.
Easy to get wrong
- Over-apologising after an awkward moment.
- Filling every silence with nervous talk.
Try it now: Your restart questions
- Write three questions you could use to restart a stalled conversation.
- Keep them light and open.
Questions to think about
- What awkward moment do you still replay?
- How long can you sit in a silence before you feel you must fill it?
Your challenge this week
Let one silence sit comfortably this week, then restart with a question.
