Designing a life, not just a budget

Starting from the life you want and working back to the money it needs.

The idea

Lifestyle design starts from the other end of the usual money question. Instead of asking “how much can I earn?” and then deciding how to live on it, it asks “what kind of life do I want?” and then works out what that life actually costs and how to fund it.

This often reveals surprises. The life people describe — time with family, meaningful work, health, some travel, a comfortable home — may cost less than the life they are working toward by default, which includes many things they did not choose on purpose. It can also reveal real gaps that need a plan: more income, a move, new skills.

Why it matters

Designing the life first gives money a job, instead of letting income and habit decide what your life looks like.

A real example

The situation
Burak is pushing for a promotion that would mean longer hours and more travel.
What happened
When he writes down his ideal ordinary week — mornings with his daughter, evenings teaching a class he loves — he sees that his current income already covers it. He turns down the promotion and asks for a four-day week instead.
The takeaway
Starting from the life, not the income, changed what he was working toward.

How people actually behave

People tend to follow the default path — more income, more spending — without stopping to ask what life they want, and whether the path leads there.

Common mistakes

  • Letting income alone decide your lifestyle.
  • Pursuing a life you have not actually chosen.
  • Designing a life with no plan for how to pay for it.

Questions to think about

  • Describe an ordinary week in the life you want. What does it cost?
  • How different is that from the week you are working toward now?

Try it: Cost your ideal week

  1. Write a detailed ordinary week in the life you want.
  2. Estimate what that life would cost per month.
  3. Compare it with your current income and spending.
