Being ready for an emergency

A little preparation, such as contacts written down, a basic kit and a simple plan, makes emergencies much easier to handle calmly.

Emergencies are, by definition, unexpected: a medical problem, a fire, a flood, a power cut, being locked out, or a family crisis. In the moment, stress makes it hard to think clearly. Preparation done in calm times does the thinking for you.

Useful basics include knowing how to reach your local emergency services, having important phone numbers written down and not only stored in your phone, a simple first-aid kit, a torch, and a plan for where your household would meet or who they would call if separated.

Learning basic first aid, through a short course if one is available near you, is one of the most practical skills anyone can have. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes of an emergency can make a real difference to someone's life.

See it happen

During a storm, the power goes out in Hana's building at night. Her phone battery is low, she has no torch, and she cannot find her elderly neighbour's son's phone number.

The first reaction
Power cuts are rare where she lives, so preparing for them never seemed worth the time or effort.
With the idea
After the storm, she puts together a small kit with a torch, batteries, a phone power bank and a written list of important numbers, including her neighbour's family. Next time the power goes, she is calm and can help others.
What changed
She prepared in a calm moment so she could act clearly in a stressful one.

Easy to take the wrong way

Being prepared is not about living in fear of disaster. It is a small, one-time effort that lets you worry less, because you know you can cope if something happens.
