Practical life

Handle the everyday admin of adult life calmly, so that a lost document or an emergency is an inconvenience, not a crisis.

Handle the everyday admin of adult life calmly, so that a lost document or an emergency is an inconvenience, not a crisis.

The lessons

  • Keeping important documents safe — Know where your important documents are, keep them safe, and keep a copy somewhere else in case the originals are lost.
  • Reading a contract before you sign — A contract is a promise you can be held to. Read it, ask about anything unclear, and know how to get out before you sign.
  • Being ready for an emergency — A little preparation, such as contacts written down, a basic kit and a simple plan, makes emergencies much easier to handle calmly.
  • Buying big things wisely — For large purchases, slow down: compare options, check the total cost over time, and wait at least a day before deciding.
  • Running a home without chaos — A few simple systems, such as a place for everything, a regular routine and shared jobs, keep a home running without constant effort.

Practise

Look around your own life admin. Write down which important documents you could find in five minutes, which you could not, and one contract you signed without reading.

  • A considered answer tends to include: is honest about what is hard to find
  • A considered answer tends to include: names specific documents or contracts
  • A considered answer tends to include: picks one small fix to do first

Try it this week

This week, do one item from the checklist you have not done yet, such as copying your documents, writing down emergency contacts or listing your bills.

Reflect

Which practical skill do you wish someone had taught you earlier, and who could you now pass it on to?

A checklist

  • My identity documents are stored somewhere safe
  • A copy of my key documents is kept somewhere else
  • My emergency contacts are written down, not only in my phone
  • I know how to reach my local emergency services
  • I have a basic first-aid kit
  • My recurring bills are listed with their due dates
  • I have a simple kit for small repairs
  • I have a plan for a power or internet outage
  • My important accounts can be recovered if I lose my phone
  • I understand what the insurance I have covers
