Write a recovery plan

Level: Beginner · Free — no account needed to read

Decide in advance what you’ll do after a gap — the first step, the minimum version, who helps, what you’ll tell yourself.

Why it may help

Gaps are normal; a plan means returning doesn’t depend on motivation or a blank start.

When to use it

  • Habits that stop after illness or travel
  • Before a busy season

How to apply it

  1. Define what counts as a miss.
  2. Write the first thing you’ll do after one.
  3. Write the minimum version to return with.
  4. Write a kind message to your future self.

An example

Ines’s plan: the first day she feels well after an illness, five minutes of gentle stretching.

The common mistake

Planning to return at full size.

Practise it

Write a recovery plan for one habit.

What the evidence says

Research-supported: Good studies support it, but there are fewer of them, the effects are modest, or they come from a narrow set of situations.

Coping planning and relapse-prevention research support planning for setbacks in advance.

Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy (v1) codes: 1.2, 1.4.

Problems it helps with

  • “I miss one day and give up.” — Once the run is broken, the whole habit feels ruined, and it’s easier to stop than to start again.
  • “I start strongly and then stop.” — The first week or two go well, then it thins out and quietly disappears.

Lessons behind it

  • A recovery plan before you need it — Decide now how you’ll return after a gap. (6 min · Beginner)
  • Restarting after an interruption — Coming back after illness, travel or a hard month — smaller, sooner, without guilt. (5 min · Beginner)
