Start with your own direction

Create your direction first; use AI to explore around it.

If you always start by asking AI for ideas, your work drifts toward the average of everything it has seen. Starting with your own sketch, however rough, keeps the work yours.

Constraints help. "A poster using only two colours." "A story in 100 words." Limits force original choices and make combinations of unrelated ideas more likely.

Then use AI as a collaborator: to extend your idea, show variations, or find weaknesses. Direction first, generation second.

See it happen

You sit down to write a ten-minute talk about your first year in a new trade.

The read that arrives on its own
Open an assistant, ask for an outline for a talk on that subject, and start filling the sections in.
The same situation, with this idea
You spend ten minutes on paper first and find the thing you actually want to say — that the part nobody warned you about was how much of the job is waiting. Then you ask for five ways to open on exactly that, and keep the one that fits.
What changed
The order decided the outcome. The generated outline was competent and generic because the only thing it had to work from was the subject. Ten minutes of your own gave it a point of view to be useful about.

The takeaway

Create your direction first; use AI to explore around it.

Easy to take the wrong way

Hearing this as "the first draft has to be unassisted". It applies to the direction, not the labour — once you know what you are saying, help with structure, wording and variations costs you nothing at all.

Try this

Sketch an idea by hand in ten minutes before opening any AI tool. Then ask AI for five variations and keep only what serves your direction.
