The scout question

A check on whether you are trying to see clearly or trying to win. Whenever you notice yourself researching a conclusion you already hold.

A check on whether you are trying to see clearly or trying to win.

The steps

  1. Notice a belief you are defending.
  2. Ask: would I accept this same evidence if it pointed the other way?
  3. Ask: am I looking for whether this is true, or for reasons it is true?
  4. Ask: what would I have to see to change my mind? Write it down specifically.
  5. If nothing would, say so plainly — that is a finding about the belief, not a failure.

When to use it

Whenever you notice yourself researching a conclusion you already hold.

What it will not do

Knowing the question does not stop you doing it. Writing the answer down is what helps.
