Slow down and verify
Pressure depends on speed. Time and checking are your strongest protection.

The idea
Almost every form of manipulation depends on speed: decide now, act before thinking, don’t tell anyone. So the single strongest protection is slowing down. “I don’t decide on the same day” protects you from a huge share of bad decisions.
Verifying is the second: check claims independently, read the terms, look up the organisation, ask someone who knows. Avoiding impulsive commitments — big purchases, signing, lending, joining — until you have slept on them is a habit worth building before you need it.
Why it matters
Time and checking are available to everyone, cost nothing, and defeat most manipulation.
See it happen
At a seminar, Anwar is offered a “one-night-only” discount on a costly course, with others signing up around him.
- The first reaction
- The excitement in the room and the deadline make him reach for his card.
- With the idea
- He applies his rule — no big decisions on the same day — and checks reviews that night. He finds many complaints and doesn’t sign.
- What changed
- A rule decided in advance protected him when the moment made thinking hard.
Easy to get wrong
- Deciding your rules in the moment, when pressure is highest.
- Feeling you owe a quick answer because someone is waiting.
How to protect yourself
- Decide your personal rules now: for example, a day’s wait for any purchase above a certain amount, and never on the phone.
- Treat “you must decide now” as a reason to say no.
- Check claims with independent sources before committing.
Try it now: Your slow-down rules
- Write the size of decision that should always wait a day for you.
- Write the sentence you will use to buy time.
- Write where you will check claims before committing.
Questions to think about
- Which of your past decisions would have changed with a day’s wait?
- Who pressures you to decide fast?
Your challenge this week
If anyone pushes you to decide fast this week, say you need time.
