Staying safe online · Lesson 5 of 5
Using technology without it using you
Technology is a powerful tool. Decide what you want it for, and set limits on the rest.

Phones, apps and AI tools can make life dramatically better: learning anything, staying close to family far away, earning, creating and finding help. The same tools can also swallow hours, disturb sleep and scatter attention, often without us noticing how.
The difference usually comes from intention. Before opening an app, ask what you are there for. Set some protected times, such as the first half hour of the morning, meals, or the hour before sleep, when devices are away. Notice which uses leave you better off and which leave you drained.
With AI tools in particular, stay the thinker in charge. Use them to draft, explain and explore, and then check what they produce, because they can be confidently wrong. The Beyond AI section on this page goes deeper into using AI well.
See it happen
Jamal notices he picks up his phone as soon as he wakes, and often finds himself still in bed forty minutes later, reading things he does not remember.
- The first reaction
- Checking messages first thing is a way of being ready for the day, and he does not want to miss anything important.
- With the idea
- He moves his phone charger to the kitchen and checks messages after breakfast instead. His mornings feel calmer, and nothing urgent is ever lost by waiting half an hour.
- What changed
- He set a clear limit on when technology could claim his attention.
Easy to take the wrong way
This is not a call to reject technology or to feel guilty about screen time. It is about choosing how you use it, so that it serves your life rather than filling it.
