Respecting other people's choices

Respecting people includes respecting their right to make choices you would not make, while still speaking up about real harm.

When we care about someone, it is tempting to decide what is best for them: which career to choose, whom to marry, how to raise their children, what to believe. But adults have the right to make their own choices, including ones we think are mistakes.

Respecting choices does not mean staying silent. You can share your concerns honestly, once and with care, and offer information or help. Then, in most matters, the decision is theirs. Repeated pressure tends to damage relationships without changing minds.

The balance shifts when a choice seriously harms others, or when someone is not in a position to choose freely, such as a young child, or a person being threatened. In those cases, speaking up more strongly or seeking help can be the respectful thing to do.

See it happen

Amir's son decides to leave a stable engineering job to become a musician. Amir is worried and tells him every week that he is throwing his future away.

The first reaction
As his father, it seems his duty to keep warning his son until he sees sense and returns to a secure job.
With the idea
He tells his son his concerns once, calmly, and offers to help him make a financial plan. Then he goes to his son's first concert. Their relationship grows closer, and his son asks for his advice more often.
What changed
He spoke his concern once and then respected his son's right to choose.

Easy to take the wrong way

Respecting choices does not mean agreeing with them or pretending not to care. It means recognising that the other person's life belongs to them, and that your role is to support, not to control.
