Crypto & Digital Assets

What a digital asset actually is and how you hold it, how returns are made, how it's priced, evaluating a specific token or protocol, its risks, costs and taxes, and where it fits in a portfolio.

Ownership without a company behind it

Lessons

  • A secret number, and one line in a shared record — What you own is not a coin and not a claim on anybody. It is the ability to authorise a change to one entry on a ledger - and who holds that ability is the whole of the risk. (10 min)
  • No coupon, no rent, no earnings: the next buyer is the return — There is no income here by default and no cash flow to discount. Where a protocol does pay a yield, the useful question is not how much - it is where the money comes from, and sometimes the honest answer is other holders. (11 min)
  • Many venues, no closing bell, no reference price — The quote is for the next unit, not for your position, and there is no official price anywhere. What valuation models exist for this class are contested in a way that a bond discount or an equity multiple simply is not. (12 min)
  • Seven questions about one specific asset — What it does, who can issue more of it, who already holds it, how deep the book is, whether the rules can be changed, where you would keep it, and what would tell you that you were wrong. (14 min)
  • Total loss is an outcome here, not a tail — Four separate routes lead to zero, none of them exotic. Then the volatility arithmetic, the costs nobody totals, and a tax treatment that can leave a bill in currency against a position that has already fallen. (13 min)
  • A sized bet, renewed on purpose — If it belongs anywhere, it belongs as a position small enough that a total loss is survivable - and the diversification argument most often used to justify it has a habit of failing in exactly the weeks it is needed. (9 min)
