Habit Lab — learn, practise and experiment with habits

Habits' learn · practise · experiment centre: 10 modules, 60 techniques, a troubleshooter, experiments.

Step 1: Open Habit Lab

On Habits, choose 🧪 Habit Lab. It opens with its own sidebar; “Back to Habits” returns you. The line at the foot of each Habits tab, and “Improve this habit in Habit Lab” on a habit’s page, lead here too.

Step 2: Read it without an account

Habit Lab is also public at myfulljourney.com/habit-lab — 103 lessons across 10 modules, 60 techniques and the troubleshooter — free to read without an account. Signed in, it works with your own habits: apply a technique to one, and run experiments on its logs.

Step 3: Learn how habits work

Ten modules: Start here, How habits work, Build better habits, Change & break habits, Motivation & mind, Environment & context, Planning & self-regulation, Routines & systems, Consistency & maintenance, and The science in depth. Each lesson is Understand → Try it → Reflect, with an evidence label and named sources.

Step 4: Fix a habit that isn’t working

Fix my habit: pick what’s going wrong (“I keep forgetting”, “I start strongly and then stop”…), answer two quick questions, and get likely causes and techniques to test — each with the reason it was suggested. “What should I try?” starts from a goal instead.

Step 5: Use a technique or an exercise

The Technique library has 60 techniques built on the Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy, filtered by problem, goal, difficulty, time, setting and evidence. “Add to my habit” records how you’ll use one with a habit. Practice Lab has canvases like the Habit Design Canvas (it can create the habit), Cue Audit and Recovery Plan.

Step 6: Run an experiment

Write a hypothesis, one change, a window you choose and what you’ll observe. Link a habit and the experiment compares its logs during the test with the days before, then you review it. Personal learning, not proof.

Step 7: Your Habit Lab and the library

Your Habit Lab gathers your habits with where to explore next, experiments, techniques used, saved items and notes. The Library holds Books & ideas, Research (with DOI links), Experts & frameworks, and Myths & popular claims. Nothing is graded.

Step 8: Put it on the habit’s plan

After an exercise like the Implementation Intention Builder or Minimum Version, or after “Add to my habit” with a technique like Habit stacking, Habit Lab offers to put what you wrote on that habit’s plan — it shows which lines it will add or replace, and changes nothing unless you say yes. The plan then shows beside the habit on Today.
