Celebrate finishing
Level: Beginner · Free — no account needed to read
The moment you finish, give yourself a genuine small moment of positive feeling — a word, a fist pump, a smile.
Why it may help
Practitioners argue a good feeling right after the behaviour helps it take root, especially for habits with no natural reward.
When to use it
- Habits with no natural finish line
- When small versions feel like they don’t count
How to apply it
- Choose a celebration that feels natural to you.
- Do it right as you finish.
- Do it for small versions too.
An example
Owen says “done” and ticks his stretches in My Habits the moment he rolls up the mat.
The common mistake
Forcing a celebration that feels awkward — find one that’s yours.
Practise it
Choose one celebration and use it the next three times.
What the evidence says
Practitioner framework: A practical approach from an author, coach or educator. Often useful and built on research, but the framework itself has not been tested as a whole.
Celebration comes from the Tiny Habits method and fits research on immediate reinforcement, but has not been tested much as a technique on its own.
Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy (v1) codes: 10.9.

Problems it helps with
- “I don’t feel motivated.” — You know it matters, but when the moment comes you just don’t feel like it.
- “If I can’t do it properly, I don’t do it at all.” — A day that can’t hold the full version becomes a day of nothing.
Lessons behind it
- Mark the finish — A clear signal that it’s done, a moment of satisfaction — without turning life into a game. (5 min · Beginner)
